Last week, the 10th and 11th grade visited the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese, NC. The students investigated the important role of oysters🦪 in the Albemarle-Pamlico ecosystem. They identified the different animals that live in oyster reefs such as the American eel, mud crabs 🦀, gobies, mummichogs, small shrimp 🦐, and barnacles. The students then took their oyster clumps to the lab to look at our samples under the microscope 🔬, seeing up close and personal about the workings of oysters and barnacles. ENCSD students also had the opportunity to experience how vital oysters are to our home, North Carolina.
