The Mission of the Department of Public Instruction:  
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state's public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for an Education Program Consultant II (Working Title: Math Consultant) for our Office of Exceptional Children, Program Improvement Professional Development Section.

This Program Improvement Professional Development Section is responsible for providing assistance in the following areas:  administration of a federally sponsored grant (State Personnel Development Grant) designed to improve both pre-service and in-service personnel to deliver quality instruction to students with disabilities (PK – 12), evaluation of exceptional children teacher education programs, strategic planning to recruit and retain quality EC personnel, collaboration with Human Resources Management of EC licensure issues, coordination of all professional development for the EC Division, facilitation of program development for research-based instruction for students with disabilities, and collaboration with Institutes of Higher Education.

This position provides, coordinates, and supports the professional development in mathematics for teachers and administrators of exceptional children under the direction of the State Personnel Development Grant (SPDG) Director. This consultant will collaborate with the consultants within the Program Improvement Professional Development; Policy, Monitoring and Audit; and Special Programs & Data; and regional personnel to be sensitive to the data driven continuous improvement needs of each PSU and region.  This collaboration will result in coordinated research-based math professional development and instructional model program support and coaching for teachers of students with disabilities.  Duties also include working with the Department of Public Instruction personnel on intra-agency issues affecting the delivery of quality services; working with professional, parent, and service organizations and associations to promote appropriate public education; and serving on task forces and committees to promote improved services for North Carolina public schools.

This is a home-based, regional position and is subject to approximately 50% travel and will serve the North Central and Sandhills regions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Demonstrated experience with Exceptional Children program and/or policy.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and/or delivering formal presentations and/or trainings.
  • Demonstrated experience collecting and/or using data.

Management Preferences

  • Experience recruiting and retaining Exceptional Children teachers
  • Experience working with Institutes of Higher Education teacher education programs and certification as an instructor of Reading Research to Classroom Practice and Foundations of Math is highly recommended.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in the education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of specifically related experience in public education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
