Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf is one of two schools for the deaf in North Carolina that is dedicated to providing an appropriate environment in which a hearing-impaired child can develop to his/her maximum potential in all areas: academic, vocational, communication, social, emotional, and Independent Living skills. The ENCSD serves Kindergarten – 12th grade, serving 54 counties in Eastern North Carolina. The ENCSD is a residential school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing operating within a regular academic year, Sunday afternoon through Friday 5:00 P.M.
The major purpose of this position is to independently perform routine assigned tasks and to maintain the grounds in a professional manner providing a safe and attractive campus for visitors, staff, and students. Tasks range from simple to moderately complex involving simple hand tools such as but not limited to the following: rake, shovel, hoe, hole diggers, etc., although on occasion more complex tools and machinery will be used such as, but not limited to the following: weed eater, lawn mower, edger, shrub trimmer, chain saw, etc. Preventive maintenance and trouble-shooting equipment are included in routine duties.
This position works Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, 12-month position. Flexible hours may be required as needed by the school calendar or the needs of the program or students.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
- Working knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices.
- Working knowledge of the cultivation, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of shrubs and trees.
- Proven Skill to make minor repairs to lawnmowers, hose, rakes, pruners, and sprayers.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Education and/or experience in grounds work that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade and equivalent to two years of experience in planting, cultivation, and care of shrubs, trees, plants and grasses.
Management Preference will be given to candidates with a valid North Carolina pesticide license.

The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language. A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.
