The Eastern NC School for the Deaf will offer a SIGN ON BONUS OF up to $7500 to Highly Qualified candidates. Highly qualified is defined as having obtained a NC DPI Certified Teaching License in the desired teaching area AND Deaf/ Hard of Hearing.

The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 easternmost counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar. The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.

The School is actively recruiting for a School Educator, working title: Exceptional Children/Severe and Profound Students Teacher. Under general supervision of the School Principal, the EC/Severe and Profound Students Teacher provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations. Work involves developing and implementing the Individual Education Program (IEP) in classroom settings that are compatible with the student's age and developmental level. The EC/Severe and Profound Students Teacher is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials and designing activities to assist EC students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their IEP goals. The teacher is responsible for monitoring student's progress and for maintaining EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines. This is a 10-month position that follows the Academic Calendar. This position vacancy will remain open until filled.

Licensed educators at Eastern NC School for the Deaf are paid according to the appropriate placement on the NC Certified Teacher Salary Schedules. An 8% monthly teaching supplement (based on monthly salary) is also included. ENCSD also pays an 8% monthly supplement.

Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  1. Planning
    1. Designing the academic education program so that it is consistent with the total educational philosophy of the School.
    2. Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, reading professional literature, and exchanging ideas among the staff.
    3. Working in coordination with other basic education teachers and other departments in planning and developing the basic program.
  2. Programming
    1. a. Preparing educational plans for students based on individually assessed needs in accordance with the School's philosophy, goals and objectives.
    2. b. Using appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to instructional areas to assess student progress.
    3. c. Preparing lesson plans for each group or class assigned.
    4. d. Developing and maintaining a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
    5. e. Providing varied instructional techniques and media through individual and/or group sessions designed to meet the educational, social and emotional needs of the students.
    6. f. Taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment and facilities.
    7. g. Participating in School activities, clubs and committees.
    8. h. Assisting in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and School Policies.
    9. i. Assisting in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
    10. j. Providing for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
  3. Monitoring and Reporting
    1. a. Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records in his/her permanent folder.
    2. b. Evaluating student progress on a regular basis and providing feedback to students and parents.
    3. c. Supplying progress reports to school personnel and to parents of students as necessary and requested.
    4. d. Completing appropriate reports for local, state, federal and educational agencies.
    5. e. Referring those students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.
    6. f. Attending and participating in faculty meetings or other meetings as required.
    7. g. Other responsibilities as directed by his/her immediate supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Develops and implements an instructional plan which is compatible with the school curricular goals and the students' Individual Education Program.
  • Is responsible for the development of Individual Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities; implements the IEP; and uses diagnostic information obtained from tests and other assessment procedures to update IEPs as needed.
  • Provides direct special education instruction to identified students.
  • Employs a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs. Implementation of these methods may require the adaptation or development of materials.
  • Monitors student behavior; maintains discipline in the classroom; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teaches students appropriate behavioral strategies; restrains students when necessary; records and reports restrain.
  • Assists disabled students with their personal and self-help needs, such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks that the students are not able to perform by themselves.

  • Communicates with parents regarding their children's educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
  • Acts as a case manager for assigned students; consults with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs.
  • Maintains student records in accordance with North Carolina's Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities; and complies with state and federal education statutes.
  • Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner, interacts effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community.
  • Follows a plan for professional development and demonstrates evidence of growth.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Must have at least a bachelor's degree in special education, and hold a NC DPI Teaching certification in at least one area of the following areas:

  • Cross Categorical (mildly/moderately disabled)
  • Severely/Profoundly Disabled
  • Special Education: Adapted curriculum
