Description

This position is located in Wilson, North Carolina.

The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 easternmost counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar. The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language. A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.

The primary purpose of the Residential Life Trainer involves the care, supervision and welfare of students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing in the residential setting at Eastern NC School for the Deaf. Duties include direct supervision of students while in dormitory areas, dining hall, on transportation routes and on community outings; and helping with homework, daily living skills (dressing, eating, personal care, etc.), social-behavioral management skills and leisure-recreational activities. Additionally, an individual in this position will help transport deaf and/or hard of hearing students; drive State activity buses, vans and automobiles; and act as a monitor in vehicles and on the charter bus. This position will also be responsible for maintaining records, following and implementing procedures/policies, and other assigned duties. The Residential Life Trainer may also aid students who have additional health impairments, multiple disabilities and/or behavior issues. This position may also be called upon based upon a staff rotation list to assist with weekend transportation and field trips to assure the safety of the students.

This is a 2nd Shift, 10-month position that follows the School Calendar and pays a 10% shift differential for all hours worked on 2nd shift. Shift assignments are based on business needs and can be altered throughout the school year.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of guiding, training and caring for children, youth and/or adults with one or more disabilities.
  • Ability to understand the personal and social problems of children, youth and/or adults with disabilities.

Management preference:

  • Ability to communicate using American Sign Language or willingness to learn.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in an age appropriate childcare setting or a goal-oriented setting; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a NCDL or be able to obtain.
